One of the opportunities we get in the profession of Landscape Architecture is to visit the Conference on Landscape Architecture put on by the American Society of Landscape Architecture (ASLA). The conference this year was November 15th through the 18th. We had the pleasure of attending and found it both informative and invigorating. It is a wonderful experience, not only because of the sessions themselves, but also the opportunity to explore different cities and their amenities. It also allows us to catch up with other professionals as well as engage new vendors or suppliers that support our great profession.

While at this year’s conference we were able to catch up on some of the current trends and learn more about new opportunities. Many of the sessions had a great deal to do with the current climate situation as well as how we can be more sustainable as humans. At Stack Rock Group we always use the filter of sustainability on our projects. With budgets and life, this can be a difficult thing to implement, but it really does allow us to push for more sustainable solutions at every opportunity. We have been fortunate enough to be involved in two, certified Gold, Sustainable Sites Initiative projects. That collaborative approach was truly reinforced through the different educational sessions that we were able to attend. Working together, no matter if it is on sustainability or not, and bringing all the right people to the table will always bring about the greatest solution. This is true for design, life, or humanity.

The city of San Diego is a city that never ceases to amaze. As described by a local Uber driver, “San Diego is an island trapped in Southern California.” With Mexico as its southern boundary, mountains to the East, and Camp Pendleton to the North it is essentially a giant Surf town. That being said, there is an extremely vibrant culture full of art, nightlife, and things to do 24 hours a day. Whether it is enjoying fish tacos in Pacific Beach, exploring the museums, or just watching the large military presence with the base on Coronado Island, San Diego is a world-class experience that should not be missed.

Over time in any profession, we have the opportunity to work with different vendors and companies. With good vendors and companies, we begin to make relationships with different representatives and decision-makers. Landscape Architecture is no different. Over the years we have made friends with different software companies, manufacturers, and advocacy groups. The people that work for, own, and run those are now becoming friends. Whether it is the hospitality of Krystal and Jeremiah from Land FX, catching up with Danielle Pieranunzi with GBCI, or attending an after-hours event put on by one of the numerous manufacturers, we try to make the most of it.

What an excellent opportunity to explore, learn and connect. We look forward to attending this event every year. If you find yourself in Miami next year, be sure to reach out and let’s explore together!
