Edible plants aren’t only great for your cooking, but a lot of them are visually appealing in your landscape plan as well. Cooking is one of my favorite things to do, and having fresh herbs or vegetables in your flower bed provides a great opportunity to enhance your meals. Here are some of my favorites that I would love to have in my landscape plan:
Blueberries – Who doesn’t love throwing blueberries in their pancakes or making a jam with it? Blueberries look great in a planter or pot, and stand well on their own in a flower bed. A little touch of blue is also never unappealing to the eyes.
Lavender – Probably one of the prettiest edible plants out there and adds awesome color to your landscape. I enjoy drying out lavender and using it as a sweetish spice on meat, and a lot of people use it for oils. You can do a lot with lavender, so you might as well grow it!
Chives – Very easy to grow and great to top on scrambled eggs or potatoes, chives are great in both your meals and garden. They bunch together and almost look like a taller bunch of grass but the only difference is, they produce a pretty purple flower on top.
Scallions – You would never guess that scallions can bloom into very pretty flowers. They stay very tall and upright, and at the end of each tall scallion is a pretty bulb. You can leave them as flowers, or snip them up and throw them in salads for a nice subtle onion flavor.
Rosemary – A great strong flavor that you can use to add flavor to a baste for steak, or throw in a soup for extra flavor. Rosemary can replace the small shrubs you might have in your flower bed and it will make a spring morning smell amazing. Who knows, maybe will even put you in the mood for some steak and eggs.
